ABSTRACT The three authors research surface archaeological records dominated by low-density scatters and isolated artifacts, phenomena frequently encountered during cultural resource management (CRM) projects in areas of the United States Australia. We each began researching artifact for different reasons but converged on approaches that emphasize formation these forms deposits. Through a variety projects, we asked common set questions about processes both buried exposed materials, methods needed to obtain chronology regions, ways might interpret artifacts found together densities. Answering led collection analyses datasets innovative questioning number categories often thought as fundamental research. Here, review examples our respective consider implications CRM dealing with lithics.
